Long service employees

A long time, and a good time

U of C employees honoured at annual dinner

Glittering gold and silver pins weren’t the only honour University of Calgary long service employees received at this year’s Recognition Awards Dinner. On April 22, they also enjoyed recognition from their colleagues at the annual event, designed to honor 15 and 25 years of exemplary service at the university.

“There is something special about the people who have been here for 15 and 25 years,” said U of C President Harvey Weingarten. “The dedication, the talent of the people who work at the U of C from day to day, is what shapes the experience of every student at the university. As staff, you define our accomplishments, and for that I thank you.”

This year, a total of 140 university staff received their gold and silver pins, distinguishing them as long service employees.

Here are two of their stories.

Pat Jolly

Pat Jolly’s talents extend well beyond the office as the lone nail sticking in the wall above her desk attests. The space used to showcase her watercolor painting of white poppies, a piece that ended up being a coveted item in her faculty.

“I loved the painting so much that I hung it up in my office and then one of the professors came in and bought it! I left the nail there to remind me that I need to get working on another painting,” she says.
Jolly joined the university in 1982 as a secretary for the Faculty of Engineering and is now graduate program administrator for the Faculty of Nursing. One of the many highlights she lists from her time at the U of C is a positive working environment.

“The faculty has respected me so much,” she says. “They send me to conferences across Canada to promote the faculty. They’ve been wonderful and I guess that’s one of the reasons why I’m still here.”
Looking back, Jolly says she has especially enjoyed helping the graduate nursing program grow. When she started, there were eight students and now there are 130. Jolly also values the connections she makes with the students; connections that often continue after their time at the U of C has ended.

“It’s interesting, especially when I go to conferences, how many people I know,” she says. “The graduates say, ‘you’re still here and that’s great and I remember when you helped me with this…’ They’re very special. I treat them like they’re my children. I greet them with hugs, not handshakes.”

Claude Laflamme

Fifteen years ago, Claude Laflamme received a job offer from the U of C along with an invitation to ski the Rocky Mountains. It’s hard to know which had more of an effect on his decision to relocate to Calgary.

“I came for a job interview at the math department,” says Laflamme, a professor of mathematics. “The next day, the department head invited me for a great ski trip in the mountains, so he got me in his pocket. We’ve gone skiing ever since then.”

A self-described “small-town person in a big city,” Laflamme originally hails from Quebec, but has also resided in Vancouver, Toronto and the United States prior to making Calgary his home.

An avid outdoorsman, he was drawn to the U of C because of its proximity to the mountains. But Laflamme says it is “the people at the university at all levels” that has kept him here.

Working in the Faculty of Science, Laflamme finds the research aspect of his job the most invigorating, especially when collaborating with colleagues and students.

“I’ve worked with staff across the university and there are some people genuinely trying to do big things for this place and ultimately it goes to the students,” he says. “There are some fantastic students that go through our door and we try to help, we try to encourage, and there is such joy in that. Working with the students is very energizing.”

After seeing the university grow “tremendously” over the past 15 years, Laflamme sees the future as full of possibility. “There are a lot of things we can do and each of us has a big responsibility to make things happen; we all have to contribute to the end goal.”

Below is a list of all the 25-year and 15-year employees who were honoured.
