U of C grooms Calgary’s next generation of leadership

15 alumni, faculty and staff on CalgaryInc’s 2008 Top 40 Under 40 list

Fifteen members of the University of Calgary community who are members of the next generation of influencers in Calgary were named to CalgaryInc magazine’s 2008 Top 40 Under 40 list in its September issue. Thirteen alumni, two of whom are now on faculty at the U of C, a senior research associate and an administrative staff member were named to this year’s crop representing the next generation of Calgary’s community and corporate leaders.

This is the tenth year CalgaryInc has published its top 40 list; over the course of the decade, the U of C is proud to have had more than 100 of its alumni, faculty and staff named to this elite group. CalgaryInc recognizes Top 40 Under 40 recipients for excellence in their careers, giving back to their communities and raising the city’s profile.

The 2008 Top 40 Under 40 recipients from the U of C community are: Martin Arlitt, a senior research associate in the U of C's Department of Computer Science; Steven Boyd, MSc’97, PhD’01, associate professor, Schulich School of Engineering; Allan Carswell, BSc’94, vice-president, exploration, Palliser Oil & Gas Corp.; Karin Finley, BA’96, BSc’96, associate general manager, Qualico Communities; Vincent Fung, BSc’98, founder and CEO, Debian Information Technologies; George Gosbee, BComm’93, chairman, president and CEO, Tristone Capital Inc.; Douglas Gray, BComm’93, president and CEO, Graycon Group Ltd.; Theresa Howland, BComm’99, vice-president, western region, Bullfrog Power Inc.; Jenny Krahn, BComm’98, PhD’05, assistant professor, Haskayne School of Business; Susan Lerner, BComm’03, consultant, Western Management Consultants; Jay MacGillivray, BA’91, director of business development, Structured Abstraction Inc.; Joe McFarlane, BComm’93, CFO, Sabretooth Energy Ltd.; Marie Rajic, BA’93, executive director, regional affairs for Alberta, Government of Canada, and Jodi Willoughby, BCR’01, co-owner, Crave Cookies and Cupcakes.

Boyd and Krahn share the honour as alumni who have returned to campus in academic capacities as faculty members. In addition to the 13 alumni, Katrina Bradley, director of development and alumni relations at the U of C’s Faculty of Social Work, was also named to the list.

“Over the last decade, University of Calgary alumni have been a big part of the CalgaryInc Top 40 Under 40," said Catherine Bagnell Styles, the U of C’s associate vice-president, external relations. “Our alumni family of 130,000 graduates are proud to call these 14 as our own, and we congratulate all those recognized by the top 40 list—they help make Calgary a great community.”
