Largest class of adult learners to graduate from the University of Calgary
June 12, 2012
University of Calgary Continuing Education’s largest-ever graduating class will receive certificates and congratulations from University of Calgary President Elizabeth Cannon and Director of Continuing Education Scott McLean this Thursday evening.
The 574 adult learners in over 50 programs of study are a testament to continuous learning. Most are pursuing their education on a part-time basis, while managing careers and busy family lives at the same time. A large number already have diplomas or degrees from the University of Calgary or other post secondary institutions. They have come to Continuing Education for career-specific learning that can help them advance professionally, or make transitions into new fields.
“Our students come to us from a wide range of backgrounds,” said Judith Russell, University of Calgary Continuing Education registrar. “While their professional development goals differ, they all share a real commitment to continuous learning. Most of them have fit their courses around very busy lives. I congratulate them all on their perseverance and achievement.”
This year’s graduates are receiving certificates in areas such as adult learning; computer applications and technology; environmental management; health, safety and environment; leadership; human resources; management; marketing; public relations; real estate development; security; teaching second languages; visual design; and French and Spanish studies.
University of Calgary Continuing Education serves over 20,000 learners annually. Students are taught by nearly 500 instructors, who deliver over 1,200 Continuing Education courses each year.
Several scholarships will be awarded during the ceremony, including a $1000 APEGA scholarship; five $750 Kay Pringle Memorial Scholarships; two $625 scholarships from the Health and Safety Conference Society of Alberta; two $500 Thomas Brown and Linda Harvey Scholarships; two Contemporary Women’s Awards of $500 each; two Continuing Education Endowment Awards of $500 each; one $300 Human Resources Institute of Alberta Award; two $250 Esmail and Safana Bharwani Bursaries of $250 each; and two $150 Continuing Education Awards for Exceptional Performance.
