This Saturday, October 24, the University of Calgary will launch its new entrance scholarship program, which recognizes the academic excellence of high-achieving incoming students.
Awards are based on academic performance in high school and are automatically awarded to all first-year undergraduate students. Students with admission averages of 90 per cent or greater will receive a renewable entrance scholarship valued at $2,000 or $2,500. U of C also has entrance scholarships for high-achieving students with admission averages of 80 per cent to 89 per cent, valued at $500 or $1,250.
“Our entrance scholarship program recognizes the hard work and exceptional achievement of high school students,” says Ann Tierney, vice-provost (students). “By making these awards renewable for a second year, we will continue to award academic excellence and assist students in financing their education at the U of C.”
This new program complements the U of C’s prestige scholarship program of renewable major awards valued at $10,000 annually or more, such as the Chancellor's scholarships and the Schulich Engineering scholarships. These, and other prestige awards require an application and are competitive.
The U of C also offers a number of scholarships and awards that recognize extracurricular, volunteer and or athletic achievement, as well as a bursary program for students with financial need.
Annually, the U of C provides undergraduate students with more than $11.5 million in awards and scholarships.
The program launch will take place this weekend at the university’s annual Open House event for prospective students. Each year, this event welcomes over 4,000 visitors from Calgary, all over Alberta, and across Canada.
Open House provides an interactive experience for prospective students and their families to learn about programs, faculties and services at the U of C. Visitors will have direct access to professors and students, and will be provided with the information they need to make an informed decision about post secondary education.
