Olympic Oval Hosts Essent ISU World Cup Race, Dec 4 – 6

2010 Winter Games preview features the fastest skaters from Canada and around the world in head to head competition

The fastest long-track speed skaters in the world are coming to the Olympic Oval, University of Calgary, December 4 -6, attempting to qualify for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.

The Essent ISU World Cup is one of the largest and most important ‘pre-Olympic’ races on the World Cup circuit. Over 130 of the world’s fastest skaters, representing 26 countries, are already confirmed.

Don’t miss this weekend of great personal and national rivalry as the world’s best try to qualify for the Vancouver games.

Some top Canadians to watch during the World Cup:

Denny Morrision: Silver medalist in the 1000m and bronze medalist in the 1500m at the 2009 World Single Distance Championships.

Kristina Groves: Two-time winner of the World Cup title in the 1500m, three time medalist at the 2009 World Single Distance Championships.

Clara Hughes: Olympic medalist in both Summer and Winter Olympics - Olympic gold medalist in the 5000m and silver medalist in Team Pursuit in 2006.

Jeremy Wotherspoon: World Champion in the 500m in 2008, finished 1st overall in the 2007-2008 500m World Cup Standings, winning gold in 9 out of 10 races.

Cindy Klassen: five Olympic medals at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, the most medals won by a Canadian at one Olympics and the most by a female speed skater at the Games.
