U of C hosts citizenship ceremony

The University of Calgary Senate hosted a Canadian citizenship ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 19.

Dozens of new Canadians took their Oath of Citizenship, the last step in the citizenship process.

Standing with their hands raised, the assemblage recited:
I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful
and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth the Second, Queen of Canada,
Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada
and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen.

The ceremony ended with the issuance of a citizenship certificate to each new citizen.

Following the official ceremony, they were welcomed by U of C Chancellor Joanne Cuthbertson and Calgary MLA Wayne Cao.

"It is significant to me to hold this ceremony on our university campus as it reinforces the importance of education to our society and its ability to make our country strong locally, nationally and internationally," said Chancellor Cuthbertson. "As you embark on your lives as new Canadian citizens, I thank you for your commitment to this great country and wish you much personal fulfilment for you and your family."
