Twenty-two years after hosting the 1988 Games, Calgary continues to serve as Canada’s Olympic medal factory for winter sport. On Friday, the Canadian Olympic Committee named 206 athletes to the team assigned to represent the home country at the 2010 Winter Games. In total, 108 of those men and women — or 52 per cent — were born, live or train in the Calgary region.

Twelve U of C students will spend their reading break in Vancouver studying the urban impact of the Olympic Games. They will research everything from the effect of construction of Olympic architecture on local businesses, the impact of the Olympic Games on the homeless population, the way in which protest movements are handled, and the influence of some of the most rigid security measures in Olympics history.
