U of C Erases the Waste
Feb. 13, 2008

The University of Calgary has taken one of the most important steps in large-scale waste reduction: they’ve monetized the benefits.

And they’ve quantified what it will take to get there. As part of the campus-wide Erase the Waste challenge, students and staff are being encouraged to reduce their waste by 200 grams per week. That’s about six apple cores, eight paper coffee cups or 45 sheets of paper.

If every person on campus reduces their garbage by that much, it will keep six tonnes of garbage out of Calgary’s landfills each week and — here’s the silver bullet — that, in turn, will cut the U of C’s waste disposal bill by more than $1,000 a month. Impressive.
