Eight classes of Grade 4 students will get a special preview of Campus Fair at Sneak-A-Peek on June 8. About 250 elementary-aged students will come to campus – likely for the first time – to get a taste of some of the faculty exhibits that will be setup at Campus Fair on June 9. Last year’s Campus Fair attracted over 7,000 people.
The young students will have the opportunity to see exhibits from a number of University of Calgary faculties, all of which were selected for their diversity and interactive potential.
The Faculty of Science will participate with the U of C’s very own Robot Dogs, where the children will have the opportunity to play with these sophisticated mechanical canines – who even have their very own bone and ball.
The Faculty of Medicine and the Arctic Institute are working together this year, giving children the opportunity to examine live lung worms through a microscope, see a jar of slugs and learn more about the Canadian Arctic.
Dr. Christian Bok, from the Faculty of Humanities, will provide a fresh and engaging perspective on poetry for the young students. And back again by popular demand for lunch-time entertainment are the gladiators – student actors from Greek and Roman Studies who re-enact ancient battles.
In a new exhibit from Continuing Education, students will be treated to a performance group called Small Talk Theatre, which will act out well-known fair tales – in sign language.
Participating schools vary each year, and are selected by the Calgary Board of Education. Schools are selected with students who may not otherwise get the chance to attend Campus Fair or see the University campus. This year, children from Radisson Park, Keeler, West Dover and Rolan Michener elementary schools will be attending Sneak-a-Peek.
