Orchestra meets classroom in Continuing Ed class

The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) and University of Calgary Continuing Education have teamed up to present a course starting in February entitled: Evenings with the Calgary Philharmonic that provides an informative, entertaining and affordable program combining classroom instruction with live concerts.
“No prior knowledge of music is necessary, just bring your curiosity,” says Tom Mirhady, the course instructor and a CPO cellist with more than 30 years of orchestra experience. “The course is ideal for anyone who enjoys symphonic music and wants to develop their appreciation of the classical repertoire. Students are given the opportunity to listen to some of the greatest and most beautiful music ever written, both on recordings and live, with some guidance on what to listen for.”
The course consists of four two-hour classes at the U of C, four CPO concerts and a dress rehearsal at Jack Singer Concert Hall. The classes focus on musical masterpieces by famous composers—the same pieces students will hear performed just days later in concert. In addition to Mirhady, other CPO musicians will make presentations in the classroom. Students learn about instruments, typical forms and styles of music found in the orchestra’s repertoire and music history.
The cost of the course includes the classes and orchestra-seating at the concerts. Classes scheduled in the evenings are open to anyone over 18. It is also possible to take the course through the Fifty Plus section of Continuing Education, which is for people 50 years of age and older who prefer to take classes in the daytime. All concerts are held Friday evenings at Jack Singer Concert Hall.
