Faculty of Law increases focus on business skills for future lawyers

September 11, 2013

Business skills are increasingly important for the success of future lawyers, and a gift to the University of Calgary's Faculty of Law is helping students gain a better understanding of the business environment they will soon work in.

International business law firm Torys LLP has given $311,250 to the University of Calgary's law school to establish the new Torys LLP Excellence in Business Skills for Lawyers Program.

Program participants will learn from leading professionals both in law and business, providing students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in Calgary, North America's most dynamic legal market and the heart of Canada's economy.

"Giving students the opportunity to develop their business acumen will give them the edge when applying for positions after graduation," says Bryce Tingle, law professor and N. Murray Edwards Chair in Business Law. "From learning about corporate strategy, understanding financial statements and the role of general counsel, our graduates will enter the legal and business communities with a very high level of proficiency in all aspects of lawyering."

Torys LLP Excellence in Business Skills for Lawyers Program is part of the Faculty of Law's long-term goal of becoming the national leader in lawyering skills development - the first program of its kind in Canada. This gift is in addition to Torys LLP's previous support and involvement with the Career and Professional Development Office, the Mooting and Debating program and the Torys LLP Business Etiquette Dinner.

Torys LLP is one of the first law firms to take an early leadership role in giving to the Faculty of Law's Energy.Skills.Excellence campaign, and the first firm to coordinate an alumni giving initiative.

"We are very excited to support the Faculty of Law with this gift," says Scott Cochlan, partner at the Calgary office of Torys LLP and member of the Faculty of Law campaign cabinet. "Being able to prepare students with all the necessary skills required to be successful benefits the student, the law school and the law firms and businesses where they begin their careers."

The Torys LLP Excellence in Business Skills for Lawyers Program began on September 4 and is open to second- and third-year law students.

"The support from Torys will allow the law school to become the Canadian leader in lawyering skills development," says Ian Holloway, dean of the Faculty of Law. "This gift will help to place us at the forefront of innovation in Canadian legal education, which will benefit not only Calgary, but our province and our country as a whole."
