After the flood: Making resilient communities

University of Calgary and Calgary Foundation bring in international experts for rebuilding symposium

Oct. 17, 2013

Those who helped rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, New Jersey following Hurricane Sandy and Quebec after the ice storms are coming to Calgary to share their expertise as Calgary and southern Alberta continue to rebuild after the June floods.

"This international symposium is a great opportunity for our communities to learn about recovery and rebuilding more resiliently following a natural disaster," says Faculty of Environmental Design Dean Nancy Pollock-Ellwand. "This event will provide insights and lessons learned post-flood to a wide-ranging audience of students, local and regional professionals, architects, public health administrators, government officials and the development industry."

The event speakers include Thomas Dallessio, project manager of the Center for Resilient Design at the New Jersey Institute of Technology; Christy Dolan, program manager under contract with the Federal Emergency Management Agency; David Laplante, McGill University's Douglas Institute Research Centre; and Michael Drew, Alberta's chief mental health officer. They are each giving 20 minute speeches.
