Nickle Galleries hosts Alberta stop for Library and Archives Canada’s touring exhibition

June 7, 2013

Library and Archives Canada officially kicks off the only Alberta appearance of its new travelling exhibition, Beyond Likeness: Contemporary Works from Library and Archives Canada, this evening at the University of Calgary’s Nickle Galleries.

The exhibition, which will remain at the Nickle Galleries until July 27, 2013, explores the evolving nature of portraits from more traditional representations of likeness to works that challenge the conventions of the genre.

Beyond Likeness includes works by 23 contemporary artists and features portraits of well-known personalities such as author Margaret Atwood, film director David Cronenberg, artist Bill Reid, former Saskatchewan Premier Grant Devine, and filmmaker Deepa Mehta. It also includes works focused on individual Canadians such as the residents of Richmond, British Columbia.

The exhibition inspires and enables visitors to form their own opinions of how they perceive images of others and how they would project their own identities.

Beyond Likeness is one of two new exhibitions celebrating their official opening at the Nickle Galleries tonight from 5 until 8 pm. Ecotopia, which runs until July 20, was organized by the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery and is being presented in collaboration with Southern Alberta Art Gallery, Lethbridge.
