2012 London Olympic Games athletes to lace-up in the race for gold with new shoe technology
Many of the world’s top athletes are set to compete in next week’s track and field competition using Adidas performance shoes that were developed through research undertaken at the Human Performance Lab in the University of Calgary.
Faculty of Kinesiology researcher Darren Stefanyshyn helped design the shoe, saying the usual philosophy of trying to improve on existing models was thrown out the window.
“In the past, it’s been kind of an evolutionary process; this time we tried what I would call a more ‘revolutionary’ process,” he said. “Instead of looking at existing sprint shoes and saying, ‘what can we make better and change?’ we said, ‘let’s start from scratch and take away everything and decide what we really need for a sprint shoe.’
What: Faculty of Kinesiology researcher Darren Stefanyshyn to talk about his role in designing a new, elite-level athletic performance shoe, and some of the world-leading research conducted at the University of Calgary’s Human Performance Lab.
