University welcomes Class of 2017

No Impact Man author to speak at induction ceremony kicking off orientation week

Aug. 30, 2013

The Class of 2017 will gather for the first time Tuesday morning as they are welcomed into the University of Calgary campus community. New students will hear from guest speakers in a special induction ceremony similar to convocation.

Adding to the excitement of this official kick-off to orientation week, No Impact Man author Colin Beavan will address incoming students about sustainability.

Beavan spent a year attempting to have zero impact on the environment while living in the heart of Manhattan, taking his young daughter and Prada-wearing wife along for the ride. He turned off his electricity, swore off plastic and toxins and became a bicycle nut as he tried to save the planet from environmental catastrophe.

No Impact Man is this year's Common Reading Program selection, and the University of Calgary will host a series of discussions and events inspired by the book throughout orientation week.
