An evening of cello music - Jan. 13/14

20-year old Arnold Choi returns
home to show off his promising
career in an evening of cello music

University of Calgary Celebrity Series presents Cellist Arnold Choi on Friday, January 13 and Saturday, January 14, 2006 at 8 pm in the Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall of the Rozsa Centre. This Calgary born cellist began playing the cello at the age of five and has captivated audiences throughout Canada and the United States.

Choi is a former Mount Royal College Conservatory student who has just completed his first year on full scholarship at the renowned Colburn School of Performing Arts in Los Angeles. Only 20 years of age, Choi’s list of awards already includes first places in the Canadian Music Competition, The Kiwanis Music Festival’s top prize, The Rose Bowl, the Montréal Symphony Orchestra Competition, and the National Shean String Competition. He has appeared as a soloist with the Montréal, the Québec, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestras and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

Programme includes: Sonata in A Major by Boccherini, Suite for Solo Cello by Cassado, The Fountain of Bakhchisaray by Russian composer Boris Asafiev, Sonata in C Major by Prokofiev, and Variations on a Theme by Rossini by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu.

The evening begins with a pre-concert lecture by Professor John Kadz at 7:30 pm in the Husky Oil Great Hall of the Rozsa Centre (free admission). Professor Kadz is a prominent Canadian cello teacher to many of today’s young elite cellists including Arnold Choi.
