Admission to the Medical Science Graduate Program is granted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies, based on the recommendation of the Graduate Director. The minimum qualifications required by the Medical Science Graduate Program are normally as follows:
(a) A baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from a recognized institution with a minimum grade-point average of 3.2 on a 4-point system; approximately equivalent to a B+ on the work of the last two undergraduate years. For International students click here to view the GPA Admission requirements.
(b) Proficiency in the English language. Applicants whose primary language is not English must provide an acceptable score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The minimum score requirements are 600 on the paper-based TOEFL, 250 on the computer-based TOEFL, or 100 on the internet-based TOEFL, iBT or 7.0 on the IELTS.
(c) Endorsement by the Graduate Director to the effect that the applicant is acceptable based upon the following criteria:
(i) The Graduate Administrator, who does the initial screening, will use a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 point scale, based on the final two years of study as the admission guideline. Some applications will be terminated at this stage with a negative recommendation regarding entry into the Medical Science Graduate Program. .
(ii) Applicants who pass the initial screening, and who have not identified a supervisor will be brought to the attention of prospective supervisors through the Graduate Coordinator or the Coordinator of the relevant Specialization. Admission is dependent upon approval by a prospective supervisor and the availability of financial support.
(iii) If no member of the Medical Science Graduate Program expresses an interest in supervision of the applicant, the application will be terminated at this stage with a negative recommendation regarding entry into the Medical Science Graduate Program.
(iv) Admission of applicants into the Medical Science Graduate Program is also conditional upon the applicant receiving financial support which is normally from the supervisor's operating grants or from internal and external awards.
Applicants who do not meet the above requirements will be considered only in exceptional cases. In some instances, applicants who do not meet the admission standards may be advised to enroll in graduate-level courses as Open Studies students in order to improve their undergraduate record to reach acceptable standards. If this is the case, the applicant will be required to meet with the Graduate Coordinator prior to enrolling in Open Studies. International applicants that are applying from outside of Canada are not eligible for Open Studies.
Study Permit - a valid study permit is required for all international students.
