Laptops & Mobile Devices

Laptops

The majority of students in the UME program currently use laptops. There is no recommended laptop for the program, and students decide whether to own one and which model to own on their own.
The University of Calgary Microstore offers an educational discount on laptops, computers, iPods and software. Click here to access their site.

Apple has a "back to school" deal - buy a laptop, get an iPod (up to $219). If you buy through the Microstore, they will give you this deal (starting now - you don't have to wait until you arrive on campus July 28). Apple prefers you buy through the Microstore. Click here to access the Microstore.

Mobile Devices and Handhelds

There is no standard mobile device required to complete your UME studies. Currently, all UME students have access to several extensive resources that are compatible with most mobile devices:

  • Dynamed - with mobile download
  • Lexi-Comp
  • StatRef!
  • Griffin eResources

If you have questions about Lexi-Comp, please e-mail Rachel Chan in the Health Sciences Library  - rlchan@ucalgary.ca

Software

There is no required software for the UME program. Year after year, students provide feedback on what software they found helpful during their time in UME. Some suggestions from your colleagues in other classes:

PC Users
  • OneNote - Helpful for taking notes on the power point slides. The main strategy used by most students is to print the lecture slides to OneNote, and then make notes alongside.  Organisation is usually done by grouping into weeks, and then
    by course.

  • Adobe Acrobat (Full Version) - Helpful for highlighting, taking notes on power point slides
 Mac Users
  • Preview - Helpful for viewing the power point slides. Notes & highlights can be made using the tips below from Adam Bryant (Class 2011):
    • command+control+n = brings up notes
    • highlight = select some text and then command+control+h
    • underline = command+control+u
    • change the tool's colour when underlining or highlighting = command i when using a tool
  • OmniOutliner for Mac - note: has limit export options
Across Platforms (Computer + Mobile)
  • Google Docs - Sign up for a Google account. Carry your documents with you - on your computer, mobile, etc.
  • Evernote - Works on Mac, PC and mobile devices. Detects hand writting, text on images. Great for short notes; not great for full lecture notes.
  • Box.net - Sign up for Box.net account. Carry your documents with you - on your computer, mobile, etc. Allows you to annotate/tag documents & pictures, so that you are able to search by your tags/keywords.
