RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research involves preventative medicine, clinical exercise physiology, and epidemiology. These three fields of study come together in my role as a clinical exercise physiologist and doctor of Public Health. Our laboratory research involves blood markers (lipids, vitamin D, and adipocytokines) metabolic parameters, (Bone mineral density, bone content, lean body and fat free mass) and physiological profiles, that provide population based outcomes. Currently, we work: 1) with colleagues from Alberta Children’s Hospital to investigate the role of adipocytokines as clinical biomarkers for childhood obesity and with the Emery group in Sport Medicine where we are investigating an injury and obesity prevention program in Junior High setting; 2) with colleagues from Foothills’ Hospital where we are examining how physical activity and energy expenditure play a role in pre-term labour in mum’s expecting twins; 3) as the primary investigator in two studies that are investigating primary prevention in university and workplace populations, 4) a new study investigating the lived experiences of women dancers and ice hockey players with knee osteoarthritis. I am sought after as a co-investigator for grants that require clinical exercise physiology expertise. My collaborations spread across several disciplines including: family medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, health promotion, environmental design, and athletic populations. These rich experiences provide me with a wealth of information which allows me to translate knowledge and impact audiences through speaking and writing.
