The University of Calgary Killam Pre-Doctoral Scholarships are provided annually from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies.
It was Mrs. Killam's desire that those selected to receive scholarships: "Be likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to win distinction in a profession. A Killam scholar should not be a one-sided person. . . Special distinction of intellect should be founded upon sound character."
This scholarship is awarded to doctoral students of outstanding caliber. They are highly ranked in the University of Calgary Faculty of Graduate Studies Killam Competition by the Graduate Scholarship Committee.
The Killam Memorial Scholarship Committee will annually review the Study Program Statement made in the application of each successful new Killam Scholar. The Committee will identify the statement that they consider to be the clearest and best presented plan of study and research among all of the successful candidates.
"My purpose in establishing the Killam Trusts is to help in the building of Canada's future by encouraging advanced study. Thereby I hope, in some measure, to increase the scientific and scholastic attainments of Canadians, to develop and expand the work of Canadian Universities, and to promote sympathetic understanding between Canadians and the peoples of other countries."
-from the Will of Dorothy J. Killam, d. July 27, 1965
