Not all PDFs are created equal

There are generally two types of PDFs: text and image. Some PDFs are a combination of both.

How can I tell the difference between text and image?

If you can read text in a PDF it may not be a text format. Text is the stuff that is considered “typed in”. For example, this documents is mainly text. However, you may come across a PDF that has text, but appears grainy. This is probably an image.

Can I tell the difference just by looking at it?

The best way to discriminate is to attempt to copy a portion of the document and paste it into Microsoft Word.

Printing a document with images

Here is another solution from Adobe. Use this one with care. It will only work if the job that is to be printed consists of images. Images may also look like text. You cannot be sure of the format unless you have gone through the following steps. For comparision, I printed a PDF in its original format - one page was 1.89 MB. I used the print as image option, it reduced the size to 387 KB. Do not do this with a file that has text - it will make the file size bigger!

  • Check to see that the document is an image.
  • Open the document. Click on the select tool in the toolbar.
  • Copy and paste a portion of the document into MS Word.
  • You will be able to to tell if it is text or an image. If you can edit it, its text. If the picture editing toolbar displays, it is probably an image.
  • For more information, see the section Not all PDFS are created equal.
  • If most of the document is an image follow the directions below.

1. Choose File > Print, and then click Advanced.
2. Select Print As Image.
3. Click OK to close the Advanced Print Setup dialog box, and then click OK again .

Before you leave the workstation - open the print queue and check the size of the job. If it is more then say 10 MB, you will probably have to wait a long time.
