Introduction
Banking online allows you to access and manage your accounts and pay bills from home, without having to visit a bank branch or ATM.
While convenient, banking online entails some risk of compromising your privacy and security. If you are cautious and knowledgeable it can be a relatively safe way to conduct a transaction. By following the guidelines outlined below, you can help prevent becoming the victim of identity theft and fraud.
Using Online Banking Safely
To access and use banking services safely:
- Use an up to date web browser (such as Firefox or the current Internet Explorer browser) that has the latest security features
- Install software that will detect spyware and viruses
- Always initiate contact with the bank's website, do not respond to phishing emails pretending to be from your bank
- Create strong passwords
- Keep your banking card number and password safe and do not save it in your web browser
- Before logging in, look at the URL and make sure it begins with 'https://' (as opposed to http://) and that there is a lock at the bottom of the browser, which indicates that the website is secure
- Don't surf other websites while conducting your transactions
- Never access your bank from a public computer or untrusted network connection
- Log out when you are finished using your bank's services
- Check your bank statements and transactions regularly and report any anomalies to the bank
- Keep in mind that your bank will never ask for personal information or passwords over email or the telephone
Internet Browser
When accessing sensitive sites online like your bank, it is recommended that you use a separate Internet browser from your everyday activities. Browsers that are distributed with the operating system (e.g. Internet Explorer or Safari) are not the best for sensitive browsing.
