How to Get UofC Email

Introduction

The first step in accessing your U of C e-mail is to register for a IT computing account.. This account allows you to access many of the computing services that IT offers including email. The Getting a IT Account page guides you depending upon your role at the University of Calgary.

IT accounts are governed by the Information Security and Access Policies. This policy states that you must not use the e-mail system in any way that harms the University or anyone else.

E-mail Addresses

U of C e-mail addresses look like this: jdoe@ucalgary.ca. The part before the @ is your Information Technologies username ("jdoe" in this example).

If you are sending mail from the U of C's mail system to someone else on the U of C's mail system, you do not have to specify the @ucalgary.ca part of the address, but it never hurts to do so (unless you consistently misspell clagary!).

E-mail Aliases

All IT e-mail account users (faculty, staff and students) can set up an e-mail alias for themselves using the self-service E-mail Alias Setup Utility. This permits e-mail addresses like john.doe@ucalgary.ca.

In order to avoid confusion, it is strongly recommended that you make your myUofC Portal Eid and your e-mail alias the same.

Campus E-mail Directory

There are about 30,000 e-mail users on campus. Do not assume that someone's e-mail address is their first initial followed by their last name! Once you send an e-mail message you cannot get it back, so be sure it is addressed correctly. You can avoid mistakes by using the address book feature of your e-mail program to record addresses and nicknames for your regular correspondents. The University has a directory service that allows you to find e-mail addresses for members of the University community. You should use this service to find people's correct e-mail addresses.

You may want to update your own entry in the Campus E-mail directory.
