IEEE Top Trends for 2012 at CES: Nahum Gershon, IEEE Senior Member

Tue, 01/31/2012 - 23:00
Dr. Nahum Gershon, IEEE Senior Member, says in-home technology's influence on business technology decisions will continue to build in 2012. According to Dr. Gershon the consumerization of IT will drive companies to provide more access to social media networks and applications, as well as issue more mobile devices like tablet computers to their increasingly tech-savvy employees. A recent example is the increasing use of video chat applications such as Skype to connect business professionals working in different regions, says Gershon. In 2012, he predicts that people will begin using tablets and smartphones with geo-location applications to inform colleagues where they are working (e.g. in the office or off-site).

IEEE Top Trends for 2012 at CES: Cloud-Based Applications

Tue, 01/31/2012 - 23:00
IEEE Fellow, Stuart Lipoff, discusses the trend of cloud-based applications at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. According to Lipoff, these services, such as the iCloud, are able to take complex processing situations that aren't practical to do in a small, inexpensive device and battery and store the information in the cloud. Lipoff notes how the device is then used as a terminal to get access to the information and coordinate things that would have been otherwise impossible. Lipoff descries new applications such as pattern recognition and various forms of artificial intelligence, such as facial recognition, as being some of these applications shown at CES. Virtual World Symposium 2011 - CoLab and Mars

Sun, 01/08/2012 - 23:00
The purpose of this symposium is introduce 1) present tutorials and examples of usage of a selected virtual social environment, Second Life, which is being used by the IEEE professional organization to educate, communicate, and promote membership collaboration, present examples of Second Life and other virtual worlds being used in a wider range of engineering fields such as architecture, mechanical design, corporate group meetings, 2) present a keynote address by an IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society Distinguished Lecturer on research topics in the area of virtual social environments and multi-player gaming, and, 3) host a "geekfest" event with presentations demonstrating wide-ranging universe of virtual worlds, applications, tools, and situations. The symposium will be jamb-packed with entertaining multimedia presentations, fun for attendees and fun for presenters. The symposium will be considered a success if those attending leave with greater knowledge, deeper understanding, and lots of thoughts on how virtual world technology is, could, or might be applied in our world. Finally, it is hoped the symposium will help foster continued cross-generation, cross-discipline fellowship and learning on this topic. Warning: Watch out for Second Life...the immersive, 3D environment itself and the "properties" being constructed within the SL world have been found to be quite intriguing if not captivating to those who have been exposed to it! We mean no harm, but do think you will enjoy learning about it and contemplating its usage and possiblities.
