Human Resources | University of Calgary
The University of Calgary is committed to transparency and has complied with provincial legislation to disclose compensation for employees receiving $125,000 or more as outlined in the Public Sector Compensation Transparency Act. UCalgary Board members are volunteers, with no remuneration, so none have compensation to disclose.
Approximately 48 per cent of UCalgary’s annual operating budget comes from direct grants from the Government of Alberta, with about 17 per cent from student tuition. The remainder is generated from investment income, philanthropy, revenue from campus services, and federal government funding.
UCalgary administrators manage a large, $1.3 billion institution that is one of Calgary’s largest employers and a driver of nearly $8 billion in economic value. Many have advanced degrees, professional accreditations and significant experience in their fields.
The majority of those on UCalgary’s compensation disclosure list are academics, reflective of the institution’s teaching, learning and research mandate. UCalgary competes globally with other research-intensive institutions to attract and retain highly qualified academics, including the university’s first Canada Excellence Research Chair, more than 50 national research chairs, and countless award-winning professors. Their dedication, innovation and creativity have helped UCalgary become North America’s top young university under 50.
Academics’ compensation reflects their considerable education – most in the range of 10 – 15 years – along with the extra courses many teach and the faculty leadership roles some perform as associate deans and Centre or Institute leads. This is in addition to their core teaching and research roles. The reported compensation of some academics also includes research funding from government and other external sources.
The compensation of executive team members is also included in annual audited financial statements. Note that there will be differences between compensation figures in the annual financial statements and compensation disclosure. The financial statements are based on the fiscal year (April 1 – March 31), while the compensation disclosure is calculated on the calendar year (January – December) and/or when compensation was paid. Also, compensation figures including in annual financial statements include additional benefits such as earned administrative leave.
Since 2012, UCalgary has also regularly posted the expenses of its executive team and Board of Governors.
