RESEARCH INTERESTS
Rampant obesity in our population threatens to diminish gains in human health made in the twentieth century. The consequences of obesity are staggering, resulting in a decreased life expectancy, increased prevalence of chronic disease and a lower quality of life. Dr. Shearer’s goal is to develop an interdisciplinary research program examining the interactions between nutrition, genes and the development of metabolic diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. While many scientists study genetic regulation or metabolism, there are few that are capable of integrating these two disciplines in the context of the whole animal and its physiological function. Employing innovative techniques, she is able to gain insight into metabolic processes as they occur in the living organism (in vivo).
