York University Faculty of Education Dean Receives Research Award
Paul Axelrod, Dean of the Faculty of Education at York University, Toronto, has been named the recipient of the 2007 David C. Smith Award by the Council of Ontario Universities. The award, in honour of the late David Smith, former Chair of the Council of Ontario Universities and Principal of Queen's University, recognizes individuals who have contributed to scholarship and policy in higher education in Canada.
Dr. Axelrod is the author and editor of 8 books and some 40 scholarly articles on the history and politics of schooling and higher education. His publications include Scholars and Dollars: Politics, Economics and the Universities of Ontario, 1945-1980; Making a Middle Class: Student Life in English Canada during the Thirties; The Promise of Schooling: Education in Canada, 1800-1914; and Values in Conflict: the University, the Marketplace and the Trials of Liberal Education.
He holds a B.A. (1972) and doctorate in History (1980) from York, and has been a full-time faculty member since 1982. He is a former Chair of the Division of Social Science in the Faculty of Arts (1989-1993), and has served as Dean of the Faculty of Education since 2001 . . . He is the recipient of a number of prizes for his scholarly work, including a Distinguished Research Award from the Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education, a certificate of merit from the Canadian Association of Foundations of Education, and three publication prizes from the Canadian History of Education Association.
Previous winners of the Smith Award include former Ontario Premier Bob Rae, former principal of McGill University Bernard Shapiro, and former president of the University of Toronto, Rob Prichard.
Dr. Axelrod said, "I am honoured to receive this award. It has inspired me to continue my research on post-secondary education, including aspects of policy development. I am interested in learning more about how policy choices are made by governments. As Dean, I have had an unusual vantage point to observe that process over the past several years."
Dr. Axelrod was recognized at a reception and dinner sponsored by the Council of Ontario Universities on 1 November 2007 where he delivered a talk entitled, "A History of Good Teaching: Student Perspectives." The article can be found on the Council of Ontario Universities website:

The Underhill Review: A Forum Of History, Ideas, And Culture
The Underhill Review is dedicated to relationships between history, ideas, and culture, especially as these relate to Canada. It offers a forum for reflection, discussion, and analysis that is popular and engaged, yet informed by historical understanding and subject to rigorous scholarly standards.
Each issue features spirited essays on subjects of historical or contemporary concern and several substantive review essays written within an international and comparative framework.
We invite thoughtful writers who bring a historical perspective to contemporary intellectual and cultural subjects, issues, and concerns to propose essays and review essays for The Underhill Review.
Our aim is to provide those from any discipline with a forum that lies between the specialized scholarly research journal and the commercially driven general interest cultural magazine.
Essays and review essays should bear the authority of personal voice rather than that of the scholarly footnote, and should be addressed to the informed general reader.
The Underhill Review; A Forum Of History, Ideas, And Culture is now on-line at:
