The frontier reality of confronting new conditions, adapting cultural inclinations, and dealing with a volatile environment in an effort to establish and nurture new communities is central to the western Canadian experience. It has shaped many aspects of our heritage, and it is within that context the essays assembled here strive to identify and critique the impact of the frontier on our region, culture, and society.

Challenging Frontiers: The Canadian West is a multidisciplinary study using critical essays as well as creative writing to explore the conceptions of the "West," both past and present. Considering topics such as ranching, immigration, art and architecture, as well as globalization and the spread of technology, these articles inform the reader of the historical frontier and its mythology, while also challenging and reassessing conventional analysis.

With a comprehensive introduction to situate the geographic and cultural boundaries of the western frontier, this collection is a must for anyone interested in uncovering what it means to be a westerner and how the new frontier has influenced every part of our society.

Theme: Inquiry in the Age of Shifting Borders and Spaces

Dear Colleagues:

On February 22-24th, 2007 the Faculty of Education, University of Calgary and the Canadian Association for Curriculum Studies (CACS) will be co-hosting the 3rd Biennial Provoking Curriculum Conference. The conference will be held at the Banff Park Lodge in Banff, Alberta. The Provoking Curriculum series of conferences was inaugurated at the University of British Columbia in 2003, and sought to bring together Canadian (and often times International) curriculum scholars, interested in pursuing interpretive questions around curriculum in elementary, secondary, and post-secondary educational contexts. The second iteration of the Provoking Curriculum conference was held at the University of Victoria in 2005.

Our theme for the 2007 iteration of the Provoking Curriculum Conference is "Inquiry in the Age of Shifting Borders and Spaces." We invite you to be part of this conference, to inquire into, theorize, grapple with, re-conceptualize, and re-present various aspects of inquiry to consider how it might constitute "good" learning, evocative teaching, and critical exploration into cultural contexts.

Our keynote speaker will be Dr David Smith, University of Alberta. His address entitled, "Shall Athens And Jerusalem Alone Determine the Human Future?" will be held on Thursday, 22nd at 7:30 pm. in the Summit Room, Banff Park Lodge.
