Anthony Potts' new book, Civic Leaders and the University: State and Municipal Politicians' Perspectives on Higher Education in Australia (2003) details the historical and contemporary record that civic leaders have played in the foundation of universities. It then examines the perspectives of a group of regional politicians from Australia concerning their local universities. The discussion is framed in terms of notions of the self, identity and leadership in the network and informational society. The book is published by Peter Lang, Bern, Switzerland and can be ordered online from the bookstore at www.peterlang.com.

Martin S. Staum's Labeling People: French Scholars on Society, Race, and Empire, 1815-1848 is an examination of techniques used by scholarly societies to classify people that constructed the image of an inferior "Other" to promote social stability at home and a relationship of domination or paternalism with non-Europeans abroad.
