Dr. Renaud Léguillette, DMV, MSc, PhD, DACVIM

Dr. Léguillette graduated from the ENVA (Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire d'Alfort) in Paris, France, in 1994 and obtained a bronze medal for his DMV thesis. He then completed a one-year internship followed by a three-year residency in equine internal medicine at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FMV) of the Université de Montréal. He obtained the status of diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in 2000. He was hired at the FMV of the Université de Montréal as a clinician and lecturer in equine internal medicine from 1998 to 2001 and was also in charge of the performance testing for the diagnosis of poor performance in equine sports medicine at the FMV of the Université de Montréal in 2000 and 2001. Dr. Léguillette completed a PhD at the Meakins-Christie Laboratories, McGill University on the role and the molecular mechanics of smooth muscle in human asthma.

Andrea Wasko, AHT, BSc
Master's Student, 2007

Andrea started a Master's program in September 07 and is working on an epidemiology project on heaves in Alberta. She is co-supervised by Dr. Herman Barkema, epidemiologist in veterinary medicine. She is collecting responses to a risk-screening questionnaire from horse owners all over the province. She is also collecting bronchoalveolar lavege fluid samples from a large number of horses.

The goals of her study are to determine the prevalence, risk factors and costs of heaves in Alberta. Andrea also spends her free time riding hunters on her horse Kiela.

James started as a research assistant in May 07. He wants to start a Master's program soon and then wants to enter in a DVM program. James is working on a project about the partitioning of lung resistance in horses.

Katherine McDonald, BSc Master's Student, 2008

Katherine started her Master's in January 2008, her project is on The Dymanics of Smooth Muscle Myosin Filaments in Live Cells. Katherine is part of the Smooth Muscle Research Group, and her research will further knowledge about how smooth muscle myosin interacts within live cells. Katherine also wishes to enter a DVM program upon completion of her Master's. In her spare time she enjoys riding and competing in hunters and jumpers. She will make a great addition to the Léguillette Lab!

Natalie, Logie, BSc Summer research assistant, 2008

Natalie is a returning summer student aiding with miscellaneous projects including the heaves epidemiology project. She is excited to be back to complete research projects and learn more skills. Natalie will be returning to the University of Alberta in the fall for medical school.

Matthew is a computing science student from The King's University College in Edmonton. He is completing a work practicum in the Léguillette lab. Matthew will be responsible for creating data bases for various projects and online applications.
