Samantha, Hollingshead, BSc, MSc
Summer research assistant, 2007
Sam received her BSc from University of Arizona in animal science with a specialization in equine science and a MSc from California Polytechnic State University in animal science. For her master’s thesis project, she researched the differential expression of the sperm surface protein ubiquitin in the stallion and its implications on semen quality.
After her summer project, she will return to the professional veterinary medical school at Colorado State University for her second year. Her interests in veterinary medicine include pathology, equine medicine and research. After graduation she would like to do an internship for a year at a large animal/equine practice and then decide whether or not to complete a residency program in either pathology or large animal internal medicine.
Samantha developed the laboratory and protocols for molecular biology experiments on lung tissues.

Natalie, Logie, BSc
Summer research assistant, 2007
Natalie received her BSc from the University of Calgary in zoology (honours). For her honours project she investigated body form in a gliding lizard genus found in South East Asia (Draco sp.). She compared members of Draco sp. to the nearest phylogenic ancestors, looking for evidence of adaptation or exaptation.
After her summer project, Natalie will be starting the University of Alberta medical program in the fall. Natalie is hoping that future endeavours will allow her to continue researching horse and human respiratory health.
Natalie's summer research project is an epidemiologic survey of horses in Alberta. She is spending her summer constructing an online survey to investigate the prevalence of heaves and risk factors/costs associated with heaves (also know as recurrent airway obstruction, RAO) in Alberta.
She won the first prize for the best oral presentation at the annual research day of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for her presentation on the questionnaire on respiratory health and heaves in horses in Alberta!
