Soils

Soils are distributed over landscapes in relation to land form, parent material and drainage. In Kananaskis Country, there are three categories of soils; zonal, azonal and rare. Within these three categories, eight soil orders have been identified, as defined by the Canadian Soil Survey Committee (1978). The zonal soils include Luvisols, Chernozems and Podzols; the azonal soils include Brunisols, Gleysols, Regosols and Organics; the rare soils for the Kananaskis region include Cryosols (frozen soils).
