Description

The Day Metallica Came to Church: Searching for the Everywhere God in Everything

Ever wonder what God and Metallica have in common? If it's true that all truth is God's truth, does that mean Metallica's truth is God's truth?  Several years ago Pastor Van Sloten preached a sermon on the heavy metal band. When Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich heard about it he sent a Warner Music camera crew to the church to film the service. "That is so cool," he told CJAY's DJ, the Reaper. It was.  And for Van Sloten it was the genesis of a whole new way of engaging God's world.  What if God really is speaking through all things; nature, human nature and the cultural products of human nature; like music?

Bio -  John Van Sloten is the pastor of preaching at New Hope Church in Calgary, Alberta. A former real estate developer, he's spent the past five years re-discovering an ancient/new kind of Christian message, one that hears God speaking through all things: the bible, the arts, sport, science, film, music, literature, history, nature and human nature. John just wrote his first book, The Day Metallica Came to Church: Seeing the Everywhere God in Everything (Square Inch, 2010).

In the past year, he's preached on many diverse creational themes including Arcade Fire, Mumford and Sons, the Large Hadron Collider, the film How to Train your Dragon, auto mechanics, investment banking, neurons, glass blowing, The Ultimate Fighting Championship, accounting, the World Cup, the Canadian Men's Olympic Hockey team (eh!) and more.
