The annual conference is multidisciplinary and aims to stimulate discussions on a range of issues, both domestic and international. The conference acts as an open forum for public debate on topics ranging from terrorism and conflict prevention and management to arctic security and defence policy. The audience has also expanded to include students from all backgrounds and disciplines, current and retired military personnel, corporate representatives, and the general public. The conference draws individuals from various professional and academic backgrounds while providing a stimulating and well-grounded exploration of contemporary and historical, and traditional and non-traditional security issues facing Canada and the world. By raising awareness of the most pressing and potentially pressing issues of the day, the conference seeks to inform, educate, and create continued interest in the strategic, defence, and security considerations shaping our national policy.

As mobile devices proliferate and we move toward a pervasive computing environment, our ability to build applications quickly for these devices becomes increasingly important. In this workshop, we will use ScriptKit, a framework for constructing application prototypes rapidly for Apple's iOS. We will place an emphasis on applications for personal data collection and generation, as well as techniques for visualizing this data. More generally, we will discuss the types of data appropriate for collection by mobile applications as well as the user interface and user experience (UI/UX) considerations relevant to these types of applications.

As ScriptKit is alpha software, experience with XCode and Objective-C will be beneficial. Attendees who own iPads are encouraged to bring them.

Bio

Kyle Buza (http://buza.mitplw.com) worked at Sun Microsystems developing experimental Java technologies and embedded Java Virtual Machines before getting an M.S from the MIT Media Lab in 2008. At Sun, he was a member of a small team focused on the design and investigation of novel Java technologies, including 3D browsing interfaces, mobile phone networking software, and UI design tools. At MIT, he built systems to explore and interact with web data ranging from gesture-based interfaces to browser-based collaboration tools. He currently works as an iOS designer and developer at BuzaMoto in San Francisco, CA.

Transcending Cultural Boundaries: Reading Harry Potter in Nepali and Swedish

This study sought to build connections between heritage language learners and popular literature. It took place within the context of heritage language classrooms in a Swedish and Nepali school. The research analyzed students’ understandings of how reading a popular novel like Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is different in their heritage language and iterated how students’ exposure to a heritage language, using a mainstream text, promotes cross-cultural connections and enables them to articulate items of interest with respect to their growing metalinguistic awareness . The study provided insight into metalinguistic awareness when applied to a reading situation and gave a more complete picture of the participating students’ linguistic awareness. It also shed light on heritage language learners’ identity construction in relation to the learning of their home languages. The findings suggest a re-thinking of learning contexts within Heritage Language Schools, emphasizing the need to provide a new generation of hybrid learners with opportunities that permit them to transcend cultural boundaries.

"Comics Versus Art: Why Comics Weren’t Art, and Why They Might Be Now"

Many recent efforts to ameliorate the lowly cultural status of comic books have situated the form as an emerging literature, with the term "graphic novel" serving as a guarantor of legitimacy. Drawing on research from my new book, this talk will highlight some of the significant exceptions that are being offered to the literary tradition in contemporary comics production. This talk will highlight the important ways that various creators are seeking to reposition comics by expanding the scope of their visual dimension and challenging traditional ideas about the limitations of the form by combining comics with live performance and site-specific installations.

Against a background of slowing global growth and lingering debt problems in Europe, Dr. Warren Jestin predicts financial markets will be volatile through 2012. Public sector retrenchment and private deleveraging have already pushed the euro zone into recession. U.S. growth will struggle to beat 2%, even with interest rates near historic lows, and Washington is once again postponing serious action to reduce its enormous fiscal deficit.

While emerging market powerhouses have also lost economic momentum, growth should exceed 8% in China, 7% in India, and be close to 4% in Brazil. Canada may lag the U.S. in growth during 2012 as job creation and household spending moderate. However, unlike the U.S. and Europe, Canada has fully regained the jobs lost during the financial crisis, our housing and commercial real estate markets remain buoyant, and our relatively better fiscal position provides a strategic advantage important for longer-term growth and prosperity.

Canada’s financial system, the strongest in the world, also supports national growth at a time when banking crises in many countries are impeding the revitalization of economic activity.

Dr. Warren Jestin is a Senior Vice-President and Chief Economist at Scotiabank Group. He has been with the Bank since 1979. He also has worked at the Bank of Canada and taught at several Canadian universities. Warren is on advisory boards for the College of Management and Economics at the University of Guelph and the Sobey School of Business at St. Mary’s University. He has served on the C.D. Howe Institute’s Monetary Policy Council and has been involved with policy committees of the Canadian and Ontario Chambers of Commerce and the Toronto Board of Trade. As Chair of Scotiabank’s Sponsorship and Donations Committee, Warren works closely with a wide variety of charitable institutions.

"Recovering The Dead: Regaining Memory in Guatemala"

Guatemala went through a 36-year long internal armed confrontation between the army and insurrected guerrilla groups from 1960 to 1996. As a consequence, more than 200,000 people were killed or disappeared, according to the official number established by the truth commission report. The vast majority (93%) of the killings were perpetrated by the army and related paramilitary groups, while the rest were violations committed by the guerrilla. The climax of the violence executed by the Guatemalan State, through mechanisms like scorched earth and massacres, took place during the 1980s when the State indiscriminately slaughtered men, women, and children. Maya populations were targeted the most, as they were identified as the “internal enemy”, with the violence directed towards them rising to the level of genocide. Forensic teams were created in the late 1990s to exhume the human remains interred in the illegal cemeteries throughout the national territory. During this presentat ion, I will be sharing my experiences while working in one of these forensic teams.

The vast majority of contemporary designers are working digitally and most of their daily tools, like Illustrator or Photoshop, already allow for extending basic functionality through programming. This talk will discuss the contemporary practice of programming-enriched workflows. It will chart the possibilities of considering the option of programming during ideation and development of common design projects, through to the workflow of code-based, large-scale interactive installations. The current position of this specialized expertise within the creative industry will be pointed out along with the benefits and ambivalence of being a designer with programming skills or a programmer with an eye for design.

Bio

Woeishi Lean is a digital artist who produces computational media at a the intersection of design, technology and live visualizations. Reassembling methods from those fields, he aims to establish a direction of generative-interactive design, using his skills to realize integral concepts from programming frameworks to design details. Bridging his time between being a professional computational media artist, and lecturer at Universities in Austria, he has been able to sustain a truly interdisciplinary career. Through his practice he plays an important role in the development of VVVV, one of the world's foremost visual programming environments. Some of his notable performance works have been a music visualization mapping of the Arc de Triomf in Barcelona and the Austrian Pavilion for the 2010 Shanghai Expo, and numerous visualizations over the years for the Ars Electronica Festival's Prix Ars Awards ceremony. He lectures on subjects such as Digital Media in Performing Arts, as w ell as Generative Design, AudioVisualistics and Algorithmic Design Patterns.

In the Coding Visuals workshop, digital artist Woeishi Lean will guide participants through hands-on activities and discussions covering a variety of topics from the ideation and development of media-enriched interactive projects, to theories of generative design and the application of various types of algorithms for design. This workshop will provide participants the opportunity to explore various techniques for augmenting projects through arbitrary input/interactivity and extending them beyond the monitor, mouse and keyboard. Participants are encouraged to bring their own concepts, or ongoing projects with which to explore, ideate, discuss and experiment.

The main tool for this workshop will be the VVVV framework (vvvv.org), an extremely powerful prototyping tool for visual output and real-time performances. Students should bring their own laptops, and those with Mac-based computers are encouraged to install Bootcamp on their machines so that they can install VVVV (it is a Windows-based framework). However, students can bring any other programming language / environment with which they are comfortable exploring (e.g. processing, openframeworks, cinder, Max/MSP, C4), as the discussions will pertain generally to approaches and theories of visualization for performances.

Black holes are intriguing for both scientists and the public. They were predicted by Albert Einstein and discovered in 1916. Nearly 100 years later, they still test the theories of gravity, light and matter. On Sat., Feb. 18, Dr. Phil Langill will present some of the latest research and discoveries related to this mysterious celestial phenomenon.

The sky will offer a great opportunity to observe Venus, Jupiter and Mars. The University of Calgary’s Rothney observatory will have its telescopes ready with its monthly In the Sky presentation.

Design Matters is a thought provoking lecture series, organized by the Faculty of Environmental Design (EVDS), that brings to Calgary a range of important speakers who explore design in our contemporary culture.

This month the series welcomes Nick Puckett, founding Director of AltN Research+Design (AltN) and Assistant Professor at the University of Kentucky, where he holds the first ever joint faculty position with the Department of Architecture and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

AltN works with architects, designers, artists, engineers, roboticists, and computer scientists, focusing on the design of embedded intelligent systems and methods for rapidly injecting digital, electrical, and material technologies into the design process. His presentation will explore how prototypes leverage the knowledge of academics and vast open source networks to continually push what is considered possible for designers to employ as design, display, and fabrication tools.

While rampant unemployment is impacting much of the Western world, many companies in western Canada are experiencing labour shortages. These skill shortages have resulted in companies seeking temporary and permanent workers from abroad. Canada has always welcomed immigrants to complement its small population; however we have not often used immigrants to their full potential or to Canada's economic benefit. This has resulted in frustration and disappointment both amongst employers and the immigrant population.

This seminar will address the main issues many employers face in attracting and retaining immigrant employees, including the issue of credential qualifications. What are the expectations of potential employers? How can new Canadians aim to fulfill these? How can Canadian employers compete effectively for the global talent they need to help make Canada thrive?

Dr. Eva Klein joined the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary in January 2008 as a professor of Human Resources and Organizational Dynamics and the Organizational Behaviour Executive in Residence. She teaches leadership and interpersonal behaviour, organizational change and compensation management to undergraduate, graduate, and executive audiences. Dr. Klein holds a PhD from Rutgers University, a Masters in Psycholinguistics from Stanford University, and a BSc in Honours Mathematics from McGill University.

The Faculty of Arts is proud to announce Beverly Hungry Wolf as the Paget/Hoy Speaker for 2012. On Thursday, March 1, 2012 in the Husky Oil Great Hall of the Rozsa Centre on the University of Calgary main campus beginning at 7:30, join Beverly Hungry Wolf for an evening of stories and traditional dance illustrating the changing roles of women in Blackfoot society over time. A book signing and open reception will follow.

“Prejudice and lack of understanding among differing people and differing generations are the greatest challenges in trying to bridge my tribal culture with others. The problem exists on both sides. Through my work and writings I hope I'm contributing to a very slow improvement.”

Beverly Hungry Wolf in Children of the Sun Beverly Hungry Wolf is a member of the Blood tribe of the Blackfoot people. After attending residential school and college, Beverly returned to the reserve to learn the traditional rituals and practices of her people. Her mission is to keep the old ways alive for her children and grandchildren, and to bridge the culture of her tribe and those of neighbouring people of all races. She currently teaches the Blackfoot language in Cardston, Alberta.

Beverly Hungry Wolf has authored and co-authored many books on Blackfoot culture including Daughters of the Buffalo Women: Maintaining the Tribal Faith, The Ways of my Grandmothers, Shadows of the Buffalo, Siskia: A Blackfoot Legacy, and Children of the Sun: Stories by and about Indian Kids.

The Paget/Hoy Speaker Series was established in 1992 by Carolynn Hoy and the late J. Robert Paget. Attached to the Department of English at the University of Calgary, the series aims to enhance academic programs and the intellectual experience of students and faculty at the University of Calgary by bringing distinguished speakers to Calgary. Over the years, the Paget/Hoy Speaker Series has brought an impressive lineup to the city, including Rosemary Sullivan, Carol Shields, Jane Urquhart , Dianne Chisholm, Sid Marty, and J. Hillis Miller.

As a composer, improvisor, cellist, and music researcher with an interest in computers and interactive performance, Chris Chafe taps into "extra-musical" projects for data as a source of musical materials. Our ears are especially suited to detecting patterns and subtle shades of difference when the outside world is incorporated into music. Internet traffic patterns, environmental signals (air quality), brain wave data, seismic signals are some of the sources. In music, pattern and correlation are sensed in time and each collaboration has required unique solutions. This "bring me your data" phase I've been in has resulted in an emerging practice and tool kit which will be described. I have my own version of the Turing test for artificial music, if these explorations strike a nerve, they will tour.

The Calgary Distinguished Writers Program in the Faculty of Arts presents a free evening of stories under a full moon from Richard Van Camp on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 7:30 pm in the Gallery Hall of the Taylor Family Digital Library, U of C. A book signing and reception will follow.

Richard Van Camp, the 2011 - 2012 Writer-in-Residence at the University of Alberta, comes to Calgary courtesy of an exchange program between the Calgary Distinguished Writers Program and the Department of English at the U of A. Each year, these institutions host the other school’s writer-in-residence for free public events.

Van Camp, proud member of the Dogrib Nation and storyteller extraordinaire, will share stories and gossip of the North from his many award-winning tales for babies, children, teens and adults.

Van Camp is the North’s most accomplished literary figure and author of a host of short stories, children’s books, baby books, radio plays, short films, and illustrated comics. Recently named ‘Northerner of the Year’ by Up Here Magazine, Van Camp is also CBC Radio’s Writer-in-Residence for North by Northwest. Awards received for his work include Canadian Author’s Association Air Canada Award, Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers’ Writer of the year Award for Children’s Literature and the Jugendliteraturpreis for the German translation of The Lesser Blessed, his debut novel. The Lesser Blessed, the coming of age story of First Nations teens in a NWT town, is currently being made into a movie cast with Hollywood stars.

The Calgary Distinguished Writers Program is bringing poet Billy Collins to Calgary as the 2012 Calgary Distinguished Visiting Writer. Collins will give a free public reading and lecture on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. in the Ballroom on the 3rd Floor of MacEwan Hall, MacEwan Student Centre, University of Calgary.

Billy Collins is an American phenomenon. No poet since Robert Frost has managed to combine high critical acclaim with such broad popular appeal. His work has appeared in periodicals that include The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and The American Scholar. He is a “Literary Lion” of the New York Public Library and his last three collections of poems have broken sales records for poetry while his readings are usually standing room only. Billy Collins has published eight collections of poetry, including Questions About Angels, The Art of Drowning, Picnic, Lightning, Taking Off Emily Dickinson’s Clothes, Sailing Alone Around the Room, Nine Horses, She Was Just Seventeen, The Trouble With Poetry and Other Poems, Ballistics, and most recently, Horoscopes for the Dead. Honours he has received include fellowships from the New York Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Guggenheim Foundation, the Oscar Blumenthal Prize, the Bess Hokin Prize, the Frederick Bock Prize, and the Levinson Prize. Collins was the inaugural recipient of the Poetry Foundation’s Mark Twain Prize for Humour in Poetry, appointed US Poet Laureate 2001-2003, and named New York State Poet Laureate 2004-06. As well, Billy Collins is a Distinguished Professor of English at Lehman College of the City University of New York, and is a Senior Distinguished Fellow of the Winter Park Institute at Rollins College.

The Calgary Distinguished Writers Program, celebrates Calgary’s vibrant writing community, and aims to advance the careers of Canadian writers and invigorate the Calgary writing community by bringing writers of international stature to Calgary. The finished films (two to five minutes in length) will be showcased as part of the Greenlite Arts Festival and be broadcast on the web and across Canada on university television stations.

What’s more, all completed films will be exhibited at the Best in Show Award Reception and be featured in the daily shorts program at the University during the festival.

"Let’s Get Down to the Point: Discerning Morphological Variability in Projectile Points on the Northern Plains"

To date, investigations on the Canadian plains have been unsuccessful in differentiating the projectile points recovered from One Gun phase sites, an intrusive group to the region, and points from the locally defined Cayley series. This work uses a variety of statistical methods in a new effort to distinguish between points from the One Gun phase Cluny site in southern Alberta, and points from the uppermost levels of the Head Smashed-In Buffalo Jump site. A transparent digital methodology has been developed to facilitate this analysis in order to promote consistency and replicability – with the additional goal of furthering discussion regarding the standardization of point typologies, analysis, and nomenclature in the practice of plains archaeology.
