Emergency Communication

Internal Communications:

Communication in an emergency situation may come to the University campus community through a variety of resources. 

  • Web Sites: Emergency information on the University of Calgary website at www.ucalgary.ca/ or directly on the University of Calgary Emergency Information / Status Site;
  • Voice Messages - If you would like to subscribe to receive a voice message in a campus emergency situation, follow the directions at Emergency Messaging
  • Email: Security Alerts on e-mail to all campus community members with a @ucalgary.ca address and all other list subscribers. If you would like to subscribe or unsubscribe to this service, please visit

  • Electronic Bulletin Boards:  These are located in various buildings across campus.
  • Widget:  University of Calgary widget (download at unow.ca) 
  • Emergency Information Phone Number:   There will be a recorded message on the Main Emergency Information Number (220-3000).   If the situation requires it, this may also have a live operator.  If the situation is extensive, the University will establish a 1-800 number and advertise the phone number at the time of the emergency.
  • Radio:   CJSW 90.9 FM.
  • Closed Circuit TV:  These are mainly located in the MacEwan Student Centre. 
  • Manual Bulletin Boards:  Security Alerts are posted on specific Campus Security bulletin boards throughout campus, when possible.

 

Responsibility:

The Department of University Relations is responsible for all aspects of media relations and internal communications during an emergency.  They employ strategic communications to inform the campus community of any danger to safety of individuals and to maintain the image and reputation of the University.

External Communications: 

  • Media Communications: All media inquiries should be forwarded to 220-5726.  University Relations will identify the University spokesperson, answer media inquiries, write news releases, organize news conferences and the Media Centre, where applicable.
  • Local TV and radio networks: Where appropriate, University Relations will forward emergency bulletins to local TV and Radio networks. 
  • Others: University Relations is the main liaison with the communications personnel of municipal response agencies which arrive at the incident site to coordinate public information activities.

University Spokesperson and Media Calls:

In an emergency situation, University Relations will appoint a University Spokesperson. 

Employees who have not received media training and are not designated spokespersons must politely decline to respond to media inquiries while at the same time offering to arrange for a representative of the Department of University Relations to contact the media representative.  They can contact the Department of University Relations at 220-5726 to have a spokesperson respond promptly.
