Why Calgary and the U of C

I chose the University of Calgary for its diverse music program and because I wanted to stay home. Some people don’t consider staying home for university, but I saw it as a way to save money so that I can do a semester or year abroad and travel when I graduate. The U of C has a lot to offer and so far I’ve found it to be a great school.

Sharing my love of music with others

I would love to go into education and teach elementary school, as well as music and dance. Music has been a huge part of my life ever since I can remember, and it’s great that the U of C can help me further this passion into something I can use in my career. I would love to travel and teach music as I go along. Every culture has different music they live by, and learning it from the people who practice it would be a great experience. I have many different interests and there are so many different options—who knows what I’ll end up doing!

Emily’s Advice

Choose different classes

There are some really interesting classes that you wouldn’t know about unless you look through the whole calendar and read the descriptions. Dance classes are a lot of fun and are aimed at beginner dancers, so give it a try.

Explore!

Up until a couple of days ago I had no idea that students have free access to the gym—it looks awesome in there and the pool also looks great as well. I recently wandered around the education building and found a great place to study when you need to get away from all the noise. I was also able to find connections between all of the buildings my classes are in, so in the winter I don’t have to go outside.

Get to know people

Make friends in all of your classes. It will make them way more fun and if you miss a class, you can get hand-outs and notes from them later.

Travel!

The university offers a great study abroad program that will literally expand your horizons.

My U of C

Member of the U of C Chamber Choir.

I take violin, piano, viola, and voice lessons.

I participated in Fall Orientation Week, which was fun. Meeting people in your faculty before classes is a great way to make friends fast! Going to the New Student Induction ceremony is important as well, because it really feels like the school is welcoming you.

Things about Calgary

One thing I love about Calgary are the Chinooks that we get. They give us a nice break from the cold winter weather and a taste of spring!
