Mar, a four-term MLA for Calgary-Mackay, follows in the footsteps of Murray Smith, BA'71, a former Alberta energy minister who was in the role for several years and joined the private sector in August. |
Law grad rises to assistant chief judge
Judge Victor Thomas Tousignant, LLB'82, is a new assistant chief judge for the Provincial Court of Alberta Family and Youth Division in Calgary. Appointed to the Provincial Court of Alberta in 2004, Judge Tousignant was recently decorated by the Ambassador of France with the prestigious French National Order of Merit, an award rarely granted to non-French citizens for his contributions to France and French culture through community service work.

Thirty-year-old Truper McBride, BA'04, was voted mayor of Cochrane in Alberta's recent municipal elections. He's profiled as the "Green Mayor" in the Calgary Herald.

Pack the Jack

Extreme climates, fossil editionMonday, Nov. 5: McGill paleontologist Dr. Hans Larsson recounts his adventures dinosaur hunting in the extreme climates of the High Arctic and Africa at a free event at the Calgary Zoo. The Arctic Institute of North America and the Calgary Zoo's Polar Interpretive Centre of Canada invite you to join Dr. Larsson as he speaks about his fossil discoveries and his encounters with polar bears, blinding blizzards and blistering heat. 7pm in the Tropical Oasis Room. Engineering Student Society Presidents Dinner
Wednesday, Nov. 14: The stories and lore of one of the most active students group on campus are passed along each year when former presidents are invited to the Engineering Student Society President's Dinner. The 20 or so past presidents who attend compare notes and catch up, as they often have worked together during overlapping periods on the student council. "Another big draw is the opportunity to hear stories from alumni of an older vintage. These students got away with so much more than the current generation: the newer presidents love to hear the 'true' version of stories that have been passed down through the years," says Pam Bergsteinsson, manager of alumni relations and organizer of the annual event. The dinner is now in its eighth year and involves presidents dating back to 1969. For more info, contact pam.bergs@ucalgary.ca.

Add wonder to Calgary's Season of WonderNovember 17: Alumni can get that warm and fuzzy feeling by volunteering at a very special event in our community calendar when Santa arrives in Calgary to bring the joy of the season to children everywhere. Downtown Calgary, Santa and the Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede have a very special Christmas present for kids of all ages at "The Season of Wonder" presented by AMA. See the March of the Tin Soldiers come to life and hear your favourite holiday music. Volunteers are needed from 2pm to 6pm at Olympic Plaza to help make this an enjoyable experience for all. Duties would include providing information and general crowd control. If you can help out please email Caralyn Macdonald. Fun family activities at Olympic Plaza and on Stephen Avenue Walk start at 2pm and the festive stage show starts at 5pm at Olympic Plaza. |

Dean's Holiday Reception
Thursday, Nov. 29: Often called the "first party of the holiday season," the Dean's Holiday Reception hosted by the Schulich School of Engineering is a marker in the local engineering community's annual social calendar. For 16 years, the Palliser Fairmont soiree has been an opportunity for the engineering school in the "engineering capital of Canada" to celebrate with its research and industry partners. Over 300 guests gather for dinner and the announcement of the Canadian Engineering Leader Award, and the Schulich School of Engineering's Dean's Award for Corporate Leadership. By invitation only. In Memoriam
Francis (Frank) Maunula
Francis (Frank) Maunula, MA'73, passed away in August in Thunder Bay. "He certainly used the knowledge which he received at the University of Calgary to accomplish many wonderful things here in Thunder Bay," his wife of more than 54 years, Elvie, recently wrote in a letter to the alumni office. After having served many years as a Lutheran minister, Maunula attended the U of C as a mature student from 1971 to 1973, majoring in social welfare. Later, he worked with Ontario provincial social services and was dean of applied arts and health sciences at Confederation College.
Lisa Richardson
Lisa Richardson, BA'73, a teacher of English and Classics at Lakehead University, passed away in September in Hamilton. She had lived in Thunder Bay since 1978. A celebration of her life was held in early October in Calgary, and the Lisa Richardson Memorial Scholarship in Classics at Lakehead University was recently established in her memory.
