KICKOFF 2007
KICKOFF is back this September and it's going
to make its 2006 cousin look like your Aunt
Mildred's Thursday afternoon bridge tournament.
In celebration of the start of another school
year, the U of C is hosting KICKOFF on September
7-8, and there will be something for everyone
(including alumni and your families) over this
two-day extravaganza: on Friday, Sept. 7, there's
a pep rally and rockin' outdoor show on campus
with the Sam Roberts Band (and opening band
Hot Little Rocket, led by U of C alum Andrew
Wedderburn, BA'01), followed on Saturday, Sept.
8 by a giant tailgate party and Dinos football
game (versus the rival U of S Huskies) at McMahon
Stadium.
This private event is exclusively for U of C
alumni, students, faculty and staff. Friday tickets
(pep rally, concert) are free and must be reserved
in advance. Saturday tickets (tailgate, Dinos
game) are at the door. Tickets are $5 for faculty,
staff and alumni with $1 from every ticket going
toward a student scholarship. Students are free.
Take advantage of this exclusive offer and reconnect
with fellow grads and your campus community.

The next big question
To celebrate a quarter century of achievements in advanced
research, the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research
(CIFAR) is organizing a national tour of public forums
to celebrate its 25th anniversary and to get Canadians
talking about what they think "The Next Big Question" the
world will face in coming years. At each event, three
researchers from different CIFAR programs will make a
lively and spirited case for why their area of collaborative
study represents the next big question. The audience
will join in the discussion and vote on which question
they think is the biggest and most pressing. The national
tour stops in Calgary on Thursday, November 8. At this
event, the following questions will be championed: How
can we control single electrons? How does the Earth change
over time? What is the nature of the universe?

Every other
sport has one, except for the sport that
may need it the most. This summer, U of
C sports epidemiologist Dale Butterwick,
a leader in the field of rodeo injury study
and treatment, is opening a registry for
catastrophic injuries in pro rodeo to get
a better idea of how frequently cowboys
around the world are seriously hurt. "Anyone,
anywhere in the world can access this database
and report a catastrophic injury," Butterwick
says. "By catastrophic we mean life-changing,
losing a major organ, paralysis, even death.
We need to know how these injuries occur
and how often before we can meaningfully
look for interventions."
