Major donation will create new heart of campusAlbertans Don and Ruth Taylor recently announced a donation of $25 million to the new Taylor Family Digital Library at the U of C. The gift will be used to create a new learning hub in the heart of campus. The Taylor gift will also be used to create the Taylor Quadrangle, an outdoor public space running east/west across campus. |

Master planner hired for West CampusThe U of C has appointed internationally renowned Sasaki Associates to lead the master planning for the development of West Campus, an 80-hectare parcel of land owned by the U of C. The land, approximately a third of the size of downtown Calgary, overlooks the Bow River valley and runs east of Shaganappi Trail. It is home to the Alberta Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and is across the street from the new Child Development Centre, scheduled to open later this year. |

Digital U of C archivesA database of images and documents celebrating the U of C’s 40-year history has been produced and is now accessible online. It is fully searchable and contains a document describing events on campus, in Canada and around the world for each year between 1966 and 2006, along with several archival images for each year of the University’s history. |

The U of C Students' Union is hosting the Stand Up! Youth Leadership Conference for young leaders and advocates aged 17 to 30 from March 7 to 10. Featuring sessions on various components of leadership training, world-class speakers and a career fair with local, national and international companies, Stand Up! will foster skills to help create positive change. Proudly supported by the Alumni Association and the U of C's external relations department, Stand Up! will provide essential skills to tomorrow's leaders. Shakespearean scholar and professor emeritus Dr. James Black will present a series of engaging lectures for the thespian, the drama-lover and for those who simply want a comfortable forum to learn about Shakespeare and his work at the U of C’s Monday Night Shakespeare series this winter and spring. Discover the artistry, the pleasures and the contemporary relevance of major and lesser-known Shakespearean plays. Tickets are free, made possible through the generous support of the Lefebvre Foundation. Lectures are most Mondays until April 2 at Craigie Hall.

Daphne Marlatt readingCanadian poet and novelist Daphne Marlatt, the 2007 Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Visiting Writer, reads from Seven Glass Bowls and a selection of recent poetry on Wednesday, January 24 at 7:30 pm at the U of C’s Rozsa Centre. The event is free and open to the public; no RSVP is necessary. A reception and book-signing follow. The Haskayne School of Business and the Business Day Group are holding the 37th Annual Business Day Conference on February 2, from 8 am to 5 pm at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel. ''Innovation: A Vision for the Future'' will bring together students, faculty, corporate reps and business leaders from different sectors to examine the need for innovation in today’s corporate society. Opening and closing keynote speakers include Chip Wilson, founder and chairman of Lululemon Athletica and David Byler, executive VP, natural gas & renewable energy, Suncor Energy. Full conference package is only $100 and includes the DBLA dinner banquet on February 1st, breakfast, lunch, three keynote speakers, panel discussions, break-out sessions and a post-conference social. International Lights, an organization comprising U of C students, is organizing a fundraiser gala in support of Médecins Sans Frontières/ Doctors Without Borders (MSF). The group hopes to raise $10,000 to provide much-needed funding for vaccination campaigns, feeding centres, the rebuilding of hospitals, and medicine programs in various countries. The gala will be on March 31 in the U of C’s MacEwan Ballroom. Tables of eight are $900 and individual seats cost $125. The evening includes a silent auction and formal dinner, as well as entertainment from various cultures. The Centre for Public Interest Accounting (CPIA), Development Studies Club, International Centre, Latin American Research Centre and the Students’ Union are sponsoring a public forum to examine the challenges of various types of corruption taking place around the world. This forum brings together universities, involved institutions, non-profit organizations and the general public to discuss, debate and ultimately move forward with this timely and important topic. Volunteers are needed to judge the 46th Annual Calgary Youth Science Fair on Friday, March 16. The Calgary Youth Science Fair is held annually to promote an interest in science in over 1,000 Calgary area students. Many students at the fair present outstanding projects from their school science fair and the best projects go to the Canada Wide Science Fair in May. Approximately 550 judges are needed. If you have judged before, you know how enjoyable this small investment of your time can be. If you have not participated before, a wonderful experience is in store for you.
