Discovery Suggests Ancient Maya Women Had AuthorityA recently discovered stone carving demonstrates that women held positions of authority very early in Maya history—either as queens or patron deities—say U of C researchers. A portrait of a woman carved into a stone monument called a stela was found earlier this year in Guatemala at the site of Naachtun, a Maya city located some 90 kilometres through dense jungle north of the more famous Maya city of Tikal. The woman’s face, carved in an artistic style never before seen, suggests women played significant roles in early Maya politics. |
Another New Partnership Rolls Out a New Program
The U of C is partnering with SAIT once again, this time to offer a 2 + 2 program in the area of transportation studies. Transportation is one of the fastest growing industries in the country, and this program will train students on a variety of levels. “There is a need for more skilled workers at every level—entry, mid, and senior—in the transportation supply chain,” says Peter Wallis, president and CEO of the U of C–based Van Horne Institute, which spearheaded the new program. “Transportation is so fundamental to our lives that we often don’t realize how much we depend on it.” The program will begin by enrolling 36 students in the fall of 2006.
Record year for meteorite recovery in Canada
The discovery of four new meteorites in 2005 makes it a record-setting year for recovering rocks from outer space in Canada. It also confirms U of C planetary scientist Alan Hildebrand's belief that an extraordinary concentration of meteorites left behind after the last Ice Age is located in southeastern Manitoba. “Scientists have been collecting meteorites in Antarctica for more than two decades where glaciers have concentrated them along the edges of the continent. Many have postulated that the continental ice sheet that covered Canada might also have done this,” explains Hildebrand.

Grad Is Making Olympic Plans
Congratulations to Shannon Kleibrink (BPE’94) who recently earned a spot among the top Canadian athletes heading over to Italy in February for the Olympics. Kliebrink skipped her Alberta curling team to victory at the Tim Hortons Canadian Curling Trials earlier this month. Calgary-based Kleibrink had two fellow U of C grads help sweep her to victory: Christine Keshen (BComm'02) and Amy Nixon (BKin'99, BA'01, LLB'05).
Taking Our Efforts to the Community
Do you want to give back to the community but don’t have the time to commit on a weekly basis? Or have you been looking for the right volunteer role but wanted to try some options to find the right fit? Another new initiative on the books for 2006 is creating opportunities for alumni and students to come together on a variety of volunteer projects in the Calgary community. Contacts are already being made with non-profit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Mustard Seed to find dates when U of C alumni and students can volunteer for a single night or day’s effort. The provincial government recently handed out a series of Centennial Medals to outstanding Albertans across the province. A number of U of C alumni were included in the honours: Amanda Affonso (BA'01), Mary Berube (BSW’93), Jennifer Diakiw (BA'91), Barry Erskine (BSc'69), Ross Hart (BEd'85), Ken Knowles (BComm'70), William J Mooney (BSc'79), Diane Poole (BA'82), Linda Powell (BA'71), Kate Quinn (BA'73), Barbara Spencer (MSW’86). Our honorary alumni who were recognized included Martin Cohos, Jim Dinning, Catriona Le May Doan, Allan Markin, and Brian Norford.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Engineering Alumni Dinner, the faculty has reunited with the Engineering Week Charity Ball for a combined even on Friday, January 13 at Brewsters Eau Claire. A reception will run from 5 to 6 pm, with dinner to follow at 8 pm. Undergraduate students will start arriving at 8 pm. FFWD to Ten Years of Arts and Culture CoverageReading, writing, reviewing, and experiencing Calgary’s music scene, its restaurants, theatre, and films, it’s all in a day’s work for Ian Chiclo (BA’91), who is the publisher of the city’s most popular weekly, FFWD. It’s no wonder he’s still with the publication he helped found 10 years ago as editor. Chiclo says he was both terrified and excited at the launch a decade earlier. That, and he was already planning the future. “When you put out the first one, all you can really think about is how to make the next one better.” A determined attitude that obviously helped the weekly to survive and flourish despite early naysayers. |
