Bike for Your Life, and Your PlanetStudents running late for class have a new option for getting across campus quickly—the U-Bike. A fleet of abandoned bikes has been fixed up, painted, and converted to single speed by the U of C Transportation Action Group, and they're ready for use by anyone on campus. The refurbished bikes take recycling and sustainability to a new level and have been distributed to various locations across campus. "The idea is simple. If someone needs to use a bike they just take it out of the rack, ride it to where they're going, and then leave it for the next person," says Hans Luu, the U of C's environmental management coordinator. |
U of C Announces Gift for the Community
In President Harvey Weingarten's Report to the Community earlier this month, he announced that the U of C will break ground for a $113-million building for the Campus Calgary Digital Library on April 1, 2006—the date of the university's 40th anniversary. The groundbreaking will mark the first stage of a $710-million five-year capital growth plan that will allow the university to enroll 7,000 more students by 2010.
The Campus Calgary Digital Library (CCDL) is a partnership with all the public post-secondary institutions in Calgary and will create an information network that will see the university's vast electronic library holdings made available to the public electronically for use in business, education, and non-profit applications.
Partnership Will Mean Better Health Care for Calgarians
A new partnership has been "reached" by the University of Calgary and the Calgary Health Region. The Reach! partnership will take community health, patient care, research, and education to a new level in the city. "We are building on shared goals, integrating our expertise and resources and partnering with philanthropists and community leaders who can help realize the vision of a new world standard of health," says U of C president Dr. Harvey Weingarten. The partners' goal is to raise $300 million, of which $100 million is already raised to date, through targeted philanthropic investments for 100 projects and programs.

National Prize for Architecture StudentsThree third-year architecture students took home first place in a national design competition. The Converge Ice Bridge, created by Anne Maisonneuve, Ralph Bliewert, and Phil Van derMey, won the bridge entry at the Fourth Annual Steel Structures Education Foundation National Architecture Student Design Competition. The trio's pedestrian bridge won out over 63 entries from eight countries. |

Alumni Invited to Take Bite Out of Huskies
Last year a challenge by the University of Saskatchewan to see which group could get more support for their team at the first Dinos vs. Huskies game of the year was met with a draw. Do what you can to make this year a victorious one by U of C: on October 29, come out to the Second Annual Tailgate Party and then head into MacMahon Stadium to cheer on the Dinos. Tailgate starts at noon in the east parking lot; game time is 1:00 pm. Cost: $2 for alumni, or $5 for a family (includes food and admission.)

Law Grad Has Fine Art of GivingJohn Lefebvre has had some ups and downs; he's had a thriving law practice and he's earned his keep busking on the streets. And most recently he's earned millions as the co-founder and director of global e-commerce business NETeller, which offers a money-transfer service for online casinos. This philanthropic alum is also a life-long lover of the arts and is putting his money where his heart is, with a $1.2 million donation to the Faculty of Fine Arts. The funds will go to scholarships, professorships, studio space, and special projects. |

Party with the Departed Lecture
The Big Rock Lecture Series continues with "How to Party with the Departed," presented by Denise Brown (Department of Geography and the Latin American Centre) on Wednesday, October 26 at the Big Rock Grill, 5555 76 Avenue SE. Afternoon and Evening for Prospective Students
If you're thinking about grad school, drop by the Faculty of Graduate Studies' Grad Expo on November 17 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm in the Husky Oil Great Hall of the Rozsa Centre. In the evening, the Prospective Students Office is holding a fair for prospective students and their parents in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium, upper level, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

The next MBA Alumni Networking Luncheon will be held on Friday, November 18 from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Delta Bow Valley, Calgary. Sixth Annual MAX Award Gala
The Haskayne School of Business and the Haskayne Alumni Chapter will celebrate and honour 2005 Management Alumni Excellence (MAX) Award recipient Brian Bass at this year's gala on Tuesday, November 22 from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at the Palliser Hotel. Bass is a member of the university's Board of Governors, the Senate, and the Alumni Association. Premiere for Music Profesor
The Canadian Music Centre (CMC) and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra wlll hold a special concert on Saturday, November 26 to mark three occasions: the 25th anniversary of the CMC Prairie Region; the 50th anniversary of the CPO; and the 100th anniversary of the province. The program will include the world premiere of a major symphonic work by U of C professor and leading Canadian composer Allan Bell. Tickets are available through the CPO box office: 571-0849.

Tag Goulet’s career is absolutely fabulousShe’s been an editor of a magazine, a seminar speaker, the communications director for the Law Society of Alberta, and worked for a dot-com during the boom. With that kind of lineup, it’s little surprise that Therese “Tag” Goulet (BA’81, MA’86) is now helping other people find their dream careers. Fresh off of her bachelor’s degree, Goulet decided she wanted to write a book on how to find a job coming out of university. Ironic for an early twentysomething who had landed only one job, but less so considering that Goulet had always been entrepreneurial and a go-getter. “As a kid, I once made my own money and even tried to spend it,” jokes Goulet. |
