So Hot. So Cool. See
You at the Finish Line.
It’s official; U of C’s entry (Soleon) into the
North American Solar Challenge is on the road and “raycing” towards
the finish line — which is in Canada for the first time — at
the Olympic Oval on the U of C campus.
After the latest leg of the 4,000-kilometre race, Soleon is
moving up the ranks, riding in 13th place now. Rotating through
their stable of four drivers, U of C’s team has had some complications, but they’re
still focused on finishing a successful race.
You're
invited to watch Soleon and the U of C team cruise across
the finish line on July 27. Celebrations will start at the
finish line at 11:00 am, and the winning car's expected to
race onto campus at approximately 11:30 am. A free BBQ
will be held on Collegiate Blvd, in front of the Olympic
Oval. Activities planned throughout the day include
entertainment,
alternative energy displays, and solar cars on display.

Engineering
Faculty Receives Record Donation and New Name
Gold mining magnate and philanthropist Seymour Schulich donated $25 million to
the university’s Faculty of Engineering— the largest donation in
the history of the University of Calgary. With a matching contribution from the
Government of Alberta, $50 million is now earmarked for making the newly name
Schulich School of Engineering the “first choice” for top students
in the country.
The
funds will go to create more than 100 new scholarships
and three new research chairs; there will be increased
funding for field trips and engineering clubs and money
to enhance learning for undergraduate and graduate students. “On
every measure and metric we looked at, the Faculty of Engineering
at the University of Calgary has all the attributes and
hallmarks of a great Canadian educational and engineering
research institution. We are proud to be associated with
it,” says Schulich.

Owning gelato shop is far from a fiasco
Location, location, location. Turns out that is not only the key to buying
a home, but to starting a successful gelato business. So says Matt Wilson,
MBA’01, who has now opened his third Fiasco Gelato storefront in three
of the “coolest” areas of Calgary—Kensington, Stephen Avenue
Mall, and 17th Avenue.
