Pediatric
Chair Appointment Means Help for Calgary Sick Children
Canada's first Chair in Pediatric Neurosciences has been
appointed, and it's Samuel Wiebe of the U of C. Wiebe was
the first scientist to prove that surgery is more effective than
drug therapy in treating some patients with epilepsy. This groundbreaking
research has meant that neurosurgeons are operating on children
with epilepsy to help cure them of their seizures at an increasingly
young age.

competitions in January. A team of five students beat out 30 teams from Canada,
the U.S., and the rest of the world to place first in the John Molson MBA International
Case Competition at Concordia University in Montreal. The MBA team was awarded
a $10,000 scholarship prize from Export Development Canada.
Seventeen

streak collecting five medals in the eight-event Inter-Collegiate

A Quantum Leap for U of C
A set of three little words can be very intimidating, especially
if those three words are "quantum information science." But
they need not be. The U of C has launched a new Institute of
Quantum Information Science, which will research the connection
between computer science and quantum physics. There are currently
fewer than 10 such institutes around the world "Although most
of the developments [in this field] to date relate to cryptography,
the fact is we don't know the full potential of quantum information
science. The important thing is that it promises to be revolutionary—and
Calgary will be there from the beginning," says Barry Sanders,
physicist and director for the new institute.

Alumni
and Students Pitch In for Tsunami Relief
The tsunami that devastated parts of Southeast Asia has brought out the best
in people around the globe in their efforts to help. People connected to the
University of Calgary have climbed on board to help as well. Our small group
of 700 alumni in Hong Kong raised funds amounting to HK $26,000 (about CD $4,000)
in a matter of days. Alumni Chris Jones is the president of Entrix Sports, the
Canadian distributor of Cutter's sports gloves, and the company has its
factory in Sri Lanka. While the vast majority of the 750 workers at the factory
are safe and accounted for, they are still in need of the bare essentials. Entrix
is raising money to buy packages of rice, powdered milk, lentils, towels, and
other essentials. Entrix and Cutter's have raised enough to buy 2,000 packages
so far.
Student
groups at U of C have also gotten involved, including
a group of Sri Lankan students who set up the Sri Lanka
Tsunami Relief Fund.
