Vet School Slated for U of C
There are only four schools of veterinary medicine in Canada,
but that will change in September 2006. Initially rising
from the Faculty of Medicine’s considerations of expanding
its programs to include animal health as it relates to humans,
a proposal was put in place for U of C to have its own vet
school. The proposal was fast-tracked after the breakout
of BSE, and the program will have a strong research focus
in addition to offering a three-year program that will integrate
basic and clinical sciences within a student-focused approach.
The school will graduate about 30 veterinarians each year.

We
Want You … to Make Your Opinion Count
The U of C’s focus on investing in education is the “Access
Initiative;” its goal is to increase enrollment
in the short term to more quickly meet the needs of rapidly
growing
communities across Alberta and increase investment in teaching
and research over the long term to create new opportunities
for students in today’s knowledge economy.
The
Alberta government has asked the public to voice its opinions
on where a debt-free Alberta should invest its money with
the “It’s
Your Future” consultation. And the president of the
U of C, Harvey Weingarten, along with the president of the
U of C
Alumni Association, Dean Brawn, are asking U of C alumni
to ensure your voices are heard. You can fill out the “It’s
Your Future” survey online at www.gov.ab.ca and
let them know how important quality education is to Albertans.

Largest Donation Creates New Institute
Thanks to Allan Markin, the chairman of Canadian Natural Resources,
U of C is launching a new institute that will research, educate,
and build preventative health programs for the public. The largest
donation the U of C has ever received from a single benefactor,
$18 million, makes this new Markin Institute for Public Health
possible. “The institute … will be distinctive in Canada
for its focus on health promotion and disease prevention,”says
President Harvey Weingarten.

Dinos
Fans Were Defeated but Still Happy
The annual first kick off between the U of C Dinos football team and the U of
S Huskies brought out more supporters than usual this year. U of S issued a challenge
to see who get more people out to support their team, and with about 3,000 people
showing up and cheering on each team, the challenge was a draw. For alumni Dino
fans, however, they were treated to their first alumni tailgate party. Spolumbo’s
sausages and hamburgers kept their bellies happy while the fans had to stomach
a loss to the Huskies. The day was dubbed Red Friday, and watch for a similar
event next fall.

Faculty
Will Celebrate 100 Years of Education
The U of C’s Faculty of Education can tie their roots back
to the Calgary Normal School, which began in 1905. To celebrate
100 years of teacher education in Alberta, the faculty has implemented
a series of initiatives and events. A “virtual family tree” has
been created on an interactive Web site, and all graduates from
the Calgary Normal School or the Faculty of Education are invited
to register on it.
There
is also a Centennial Story Project that invites all Albertans
18 years old and over to submit a story about their most
memorable teacher. One hundred
stories will be chosen to create an anthology, which will placed in schools
and libraries across the country. If you’re interested in participating in
either initiative, sign on to www.celebrateteachers.com or e-mail centennial@celebrateteachers.com

The
Nicaraguans who populate the country today may not be descendents
of people who immigrated en masse to that region from central
Mexico but rather owe their heritage to ancestors who were
indigenous to the area and actually had little contact
with their northern neighbours. It may be the case according
to U of C archaeologist Geoff McCafferty. “This is
an idea that will be met with understandable surprise and
resistance among Nicaraguans. For Canadians, it would be
like waking up one day and being told the English never
colonized Canada.”
