Funding Windfall for the Faculty of Medicine
A whopping $17 million in funding was awarded to two researchers
in the Faculty of Medicine from the Canada Foundation for Innovation
(CFI). The amount is the largest ever awarded to the faculty. Paul
Kubes (left) will use his funds to create the Institute for Infection,
Immunity, and Inflammation to better understand diseases that fall
within that category, such as asthma, multiple sclerosis, and even
SARS.
Funding
awarded to Garnette Sutherland and his team will go toward the
development of Project neuroArm, the world’s first image-guided surgical robot.

U of
C Is Heading Downtown
President Harvey Weingarten showed how the university is getting
even more involved with the community—literally—when
he outlined plans for the U of C’s downtown campus at the Calgary
Chamber of Commerce. The campus will be an open door for all Calgarians,
and there will be space for faculties and departments with connections
to the business and cultural fabric of the city, including Fine Arts,
Environmental Design, Haskayne School of Business, Continuing Education,
and Social Work.
Students
in Environmental Design are working out of a leased studio on 11th
Avenue SE—they will help design the new campus. Brian Sinclair, the dean of the
Faculty of Environmental Design says, “With this project, we have an opportunity
to stake a claim in improving this community—to roll up our sleeves, form
partnerships, and contribute in an effective way.”

Award
Recognition is Painted on Thick
 |
A
U of C professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts won a Governor
General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts earlier this
month. Perhaps best know for his Thick Paintings, Eric Cameron
covers everyday objects, like a book of matches, with hundreds-to-thousands
of layers of gesso (plaster of Paris), which then changes the
form and meaning of the original object. “Eric is a very
important artist in Canada and internationally. It’s
the combination of the mystical that makes Cameron’s
work particularly interesting,” says Ann Davis, director
of the Nickle Arts Museum.
