Best at U of C

The “world’s
most outstanding computational chemist” is an alumnus
and professor in the Faculty of Science here at U of C. The
informal title was bestowed upon Tom Ziegler when he was
presented the 2004 Schrödinger Medal, the top award
presented by the World Association of Theoretically Oriented
Chemists. Ziegler studies complex catalytic reactions and
molecular structures by merging theoretical chemistry, quantum
physics, and high-powered computer simulations.

Is
Canadian Television Going Down the Tube?
 |
“Canadian
television is at a crossroads unlike anything it has
faced since the early 1950s,” says Bart Beaty,
a professor in the University of Calgary's Faculty of
Communication and Culture and co-author of a recent book
chapter on the status of Canadian TV. Beaty says things
like the convergence of the Internet and television and
Tivo (which can record programs without advertisements)
are factors that threaten Canadian programming.

Early
Research Says Women Should Get Active
Researchers
with the U of C and the Alberta Cancer Board have found
that physical exercise reduces the risk of breast cancer
in women.
It’s understood that exercise works, it’s just not understood
how quite yet. And this group of Alberta researchers now wants to
get to the bottom of the “how” with a new trial. The
ALPHA (Alberta Physical Activity and Breast Cancer Prevention) Trial
is a research study that gives women a 12-month exercise program,
and, throughout that program, measures the biological changes that
occur in a woman’s body as a result of exercise.
The
research takes place over the next three years. Women interested
in participating can contact the study coordinator at (403)
944-8411 or visit www.alpha-trial.com
