Individual and Couples Counselling

Individual and couples counselling is available to registered students, who may experience a wide range of personal, career and academic issues. Counselling is a process of helping you use your own and other resources in answering your questions or solving your dilemmas. Some of the reasons students seek counselling are for personal growth and understanding, relationship concerns, self-esteem or body issues, anxiety, loneliness, family problems, career decisions, difficulties managing school work or exams, just to name a few. Our counsellors have extensive professional training with backgrounds in education, therapy, and communication.

Emergency or crisis situations will be seen as soon as possible. Please come into the office or call us during office hours at (403) 210-WELL or (403) 210-9355 (listen to prompts) for Counselling. After-hours emergencies are encouraged to call the 24-hour crisis line at the Calgary Distress Centre: (403) 266-4357. Also please refer to our list of Community Resources if you would like further assistance.

Confidentiality

The information shared in counselling will be kept confidential and released only with your permission, or, in very rare circumstances, if required by law. For example, if you were potentially at risk to hurt yourself or another person, or if you were discussing situations involving a risk of abuse to children or other dependent persons, then counsellors are under ethical and legal obligations to disclose this information. If you are under the age of 18, your parents/guardians also have the right to request information.

Counselling Model

The Counselling Centre operates on a brief counselling model, working toward a solution to your concerns in as few sessions as possible. Referral within the Wellness Centre to a medical doctor, psychiatrist, chaplain or outside the Counselling Centre to another mental health professional may be made if your concerns require assistance beyond the mandate of the Centre. If at any time referral is recommended you will be assisted with the transition to another professional or service.
