The Burgess Shale is 2 hours drive from Calgary. The hike to the fossil site is conducted by the Burgess Shale Geoscience Foundation and involves a hike of 9 km each way and an elevation gain of 900 metres. The hikes are conducted on good trails, but demand a degree of fitness. Day Hikes on July 11 and July 18 (early morning departure, mid to late evening return). |

Calgary-Banff-Jasper-Calgary We will visit localities that include Upper Devonian, Lower Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, Permian and Lower Triassic rocks and discuss the evolution of the Rocky Mountains. More details to follow. We will also visit the Columbia Icefields. July 18-21 (leave Saturday mornng, back Tuesday evening). |
We will spend two nights in Banff at the Banff Centre, one night in Jasper (under negotiation). Estimated Price: $600 (based on 30 people). Price will include accommodation, transportation, meals and guidebook.
