Internet Requirements

Dial-up Modem - use traditional phone lines to provide Internet access. The connection speed is usually slow and depends on the quality of the phone lines and the speed of the modem. For dial-up service you will need a modem and phone service. Many elearning and online services will run very slowly if you are using dial-up internet connections.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) - provides Internet access via special phone lines. The ISP is usually a telephone company. For DSL service you will need a DSL modem connected to an Ethernet network interface card (NIC) in your computer.

Cable Internet - access is provided via cable television wiring. The ISP is usually a cable television company. For Cable service you will need a Cable modem connected to an Ethernet network interface card (NIC) in your computer.

Shaw and Telus are the two largest Internet service providers in Calgary. There is a confusing array of bundles and payment options, so do your research to see which package offers you the most bang for your buck.
