We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to work collaboratively with Dr. Wilfreda E. Thurston, Professor, Department Community Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, and Department of Ecosytem and Public Health, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, in a program of research focussed on community health promotion in Aboriginal communities, both urban and rural, and using a determinants of health framework, critical social theory, a one-health model, and community engaged scholarship.
The successful candidate will engage in a wide range of research activities including critical theorizing; research proposal development; and dissemination of findings to a variety of academic, policy, practice and lay audiences. The position includes participation in the Institute for Public Health, University of Calgary, and collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of research. Trans-disciplinary work is encouraged.
Expectations: The successful candidate will work with Dr. Thurston to advance scholarship in population health promotion with Aboriginal communities. She/he will expect mentoring and development of her/his career as a leader in population health.
Duties: Reporting to Dr. Thurston (or her designate) and collaborating with research project coordinators and team members, the candidate will assist with research projects, service, and teaching. Examples of responsibilities include:
• Developing research grants;
• Participating in team meetings;
• Participating in research design;
• Analysing data (quantitative and qualitative);
• Assisting with reports and, as appropriate, with manuscripts;
• Assisting with and/or supervising research assistants;
• Other research related activities that may be assigned; and
• Assisting with teaching and course preparation.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will be a recent PhD graduate with experience in qualitative methods. Experience with appropriate data analysis software is required. Training and or experience in quantitative research methods are an asset. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in multidisciplinary settings and with multidisciplinary teams. Good oral and written communication skills are required. Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals and communication to professional and lay audiences preferred. Demonstration of critical theorizing is also desirable.
Start: Position is available immediately (start date negotiable).
Term of Appointment: Two years with a possible renewal for 1 more year.
